Every winter, when Lake Wausau freezes over and the city bundles up, something legendary happens on the ice. The Wausau Noon Optimist Club Ice Fisheree takes over Rookery Park from noon to 3:00 PM and turns a cold afternoon into one of the most fun, feel-good events of the season.

What started decades ago as a simple ice fishing contest has grown into a full-on winter hangout—part tournament, part festival, and all about community. Anglers drill their holes and chase bragging rights, while kids get their own fishing contests, games, and chances to win prizes. Between warming tents, hot food, raffles, and nonstop laughs, it’s the perfect midday outing whether you’re fishing hard or just stopping by to hang out.

And yes—food is famously affordable, smiles are free, and Optimists are everywhere making sure everyone feels welcome. Even in the heart of winter, the vibe stays warm.

But the Ice Fisheree is about more than fishing. Every ticket, raffle, and fish measured helps fund local youth programs, scholarships, and leadership opportunities throughout the year. It’s optimism in action—proof that winter doesn’t slow this community down, and that a few hours on the ice can make a year-round impact.
